Sports News: Eagles Release Head Coach Chip Kelly
PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) The Philadelphia Eagles have released Head Coach Chip Kelly, according to a press release.
“We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward,” said Jeffrey Lurie in the press release.
Coach Pat Shurmur will stand in as head coach for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.
Ed Marynowitz, vice president of player personnel, was also released. The release said Tom Donahoe, former GM of the Buffalo Bills and director of football operations for the Pittsburgh Steelers and senior football advisor for the Eagles since 2012, will assume the role of senior director of player personnel.
It looks like poor management and drafting contributed to Kelly's undoing. In an article posted on NBC Sports ProFootballTalk website, writer Michael David Smith said:
"As it turned out, Kelly simply doesn’t know how to run an NFL personnel department. He has no experience dealing with scouting, or with the draft, or with the salary cap. He may know his own offensive system, but he lacks the skill set to scout other players and determine whether they’ll fit in his system."
A press conference will be held Wednesday with more information.
