Marsh+Mane x Base Butter: Changing the Face of Beauty

As a black woman, it’s difficult to find quality skin care products in a market where black women are often an afterthought. You can simply look at the way most skin care products are marketed: a smiling white woman splashing water onto her face or rubbing some obscure cream into her skin. You rarely see commercials or packaging where black women are at the forefront.

Now, don’t be mistaken, there are a few skincare lines out there that do cater to women of color, but rarely do you find one that targets BLACK Women specifically.

Enter: Base Butter.

Base Butter is a skin care line designed by black women for black women. Company founder, She'Neil Johnson and Vice President Nicolette Graves wanted to create a skin care line to help empower black women, by promoting and providing healthy skin, allowing them to have confidence in the skin they’re in.

Last night I had a chance to join these two amazing business women/ besties as they celebrated the launch of their brand at Marsh + Mane, a beautiful black owned beauty supply store located on South street in Philadelphia. The celebration included a fireside chat and networking opportunity with the business owners and other like-minded women from around the city. The intimate chat portion of the evening was moderated by Marsh + Mane owner, Jenea Robinson, where attendees got to get all of their burning questions answered and also got a chance to learn more about Base Butter’s #1 product, the Radiate: Face Jelly: Aloe vera gel face moisturizer.

Coco Gauff Is On Fire!

Unless you’ve been under a rock, then you should already know about the 15-year-old tennis pro that is out here making history!

Cori “CoCo” Gauff was named the youngest player to ever qualify for Wimbledon and then defeated one of her idols while there: Venus Williams.

Gauff prevailed over Venus Williams in Wimbledon’s first round, 6-4 6-4. Williams, of course, is a five-time Wimbledon champion. In the second round, Gauff defeated Magdalena Rybarijova, 6-3, 6-3. She then defeated Polona Hercog in a nail-biting third match 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.

After defeating Venus, Gauff told BBC: “I don”t really know how to feel, this is the first time I’ve cried after a match, after winning.” In a video posted by Wimbledon’s YouTube page, Gauff called Venus and Serena Williams some of her idols. “Not many people get to play Wimbledon at 15,” she said. “…and we’ll see where this goes.”

Serena in fact called Gauff an “exciting young player, and she’s so cool. She’s a great girl. I love her dad. They’re just really cool people. It’s a great moment for her…” She said that Gauff reminds her of Venus:

According to The New York Times, Gauff said she “would love to share the court with Serena or Venus.” Well she got her wish – and then some. This is only the beginning and I’m so excited to what else she has in store. According to WTA, she has earned just over $75,000 in her career. However, she stands to being in much more from endorsements.

Listen Up: Mir Fontane Drops “Who’s Watching the Kids 2”

Last night I had the pleasure of attending an exclusive listening party for Mir Fontane’s latest album “Who’s Watching the Kids 2”. The album which has features from Da Baby and Philly’s very own, Shawn Smith includes 11 tracks that take listeners on a ride through the life of the rising South Jersey rapper.

The album’s intro sets the tone with a dark crime scene skit, reflective of daily life in the inner city. As we progress through the album, Mir turns it up a notch, giving listeners insight into his lifestyle and how he navigates the craziness that comes along with it. Listeners are then redirected to a melodic side of the rapper as he takes a short trip through his personal relationship with his own renditions of trap love songs. After the lovey-dovey sh*t we are then slowly brought back full circle as we revisit life in South Jersey. The last track, “Homie’s Story”, closes the album out perfectly, while still leaving us wanting more.

Last night’s event was a special one because it doubled as a girl’s night! The ladies in attendance were all treated to delicious mimosas and got front row seats to a makeup demonstration by professional makeup artist, Desire Leach. Leach,  who is currently in the process of becoming her own boss, gave attendees a number of great makeup tips and tricks, on top of amazing advice for everyday life. She recently put in her two weeks at her current employer, MAC cosmetics,  to pursue her own dream of being her own boss! She even has her own line of apparel: “Mom.Artist.Boss”, which is simple in design, but beautifully impactful in its message.

KONFVSED ROSE: Kharon F. Lewis

While walking along South Street, one of Philadelphia’s busiest strips, I got the chance to chat with an up-and-coming clothing designer and stylist by the name of Kharon Lewis. Lewis is the founder of KONFVSED ROSE, a line that he likes to describe as “upscale streetwear”. The line includes everything from tees to denim and is definitely a cut above the rest.

I got a peek into the manufacturing behind the budding brand when Lewis and I took our chat into a small printing shop right off of South St. While at the shop, I was greeted by a rainbow assortment of sweatshirts, T-shirt’s, and just about anything else you can silk screen. There is where I also learned the story behind KONFVSED ROSE, a story a lot of today’s young people can relate to. Lewis started the brand after leaving college confused (KONFVSED) and unsure about his next move. With a passion for design and styling,and with the added influence of a counselor (ROSE), who unfortunately passed away, Lewis put his creative ideas into motion.

What started out as meticulously coordinated Polyvore outfits, spawned into real-life, tangible looks. The 24-year-old West-Philly native made his vision a reality when he held his first showcase in September of 2016. The line which was initially composed of tees and hoodies, now also includes denim jackets and pants, which only sets the bar that much higher. To top that, all of Lewis’ designs are created by him on his phone! He thinks of a design, puts it together in the palm of his hand, and then executes it. During the execution process, he gets hands on and even distresses his own denim pieces, uniquely cultivating each design. He is also in the process of learning how to sew his own garments, cutting out the middleman, which undoubtedly raises the value of all his pieces.

The KONFVSED ROSE line even has its very own capsule collection, called “Anti-Social”. The collection consists of a range of pieces that are definitely on trend with the althleisure wear wave. The pieces are cool, easy, and overall super dope. If you add just one of Lewis’ pieces to your wardrobe, you will instantly make a statement! All of the pieces range from anywhere between $30 to $80. He also does custom pieces per the customer’s request.

Lewis, who is better known as KFL, (Kharon Fortune Lewis), is a perfectionist who only puts out quality merch, which is evident in his designs and fit. He is personable and is genuinely passionate about his craft. He has plans for his line that far reach the mindset of many local designers and he seems determined to see it all through. 

When I asked where he saw his line in the next five years, he replied: 

”Remember when we did that interview?” Only implying his impending success.

Moguls in Media Presents: "Back to Business" Series

Back at it again! I recently got the chance to attend an event called "Back to Business", which does exactly what it says by offering business owners and entrepreneurs necessary and tangible tools to help either launch his or her own business or rejuvenate it! Powered by Moguls in Media™, "Back to Business" is the umbrella for a series of workshops, which is spearheaded by Moguls in Media™ founder, Darcel Laurie. The workshops are each centered around one ambitious professional who has garnered different experiences and accomplishments in his or her line of work. This individual helps lead the conversation in helping attendees grow or supplement their business by offering his or her own experiences and advice. The workshop is an open forum, allowing everyone to take part in the discussion, also lending itself to some beneficial networking.

Founder, Darcel Laurie knows all about networking as she herself has gotten the chance to interview some of today's movers and shakers because of networking with the "right people". Some of the people she has interviewed include, attorney and political commentator, Angela Rye; actor and singer, Tyrese Gibson ; American ballet dancer, Misty Copeland, and many more. Laurie has also been featured on a host of different tv and radio shows including, VH1's "Lala's Full Court Life", Good Day Philadelphia, and WDAS 105.3. Her line of work just doesn't stop there, Laurie is also an entrepreneur, mentor, producer, and educator. She started Moguls in Media back in 2016, so it's fairly new, but it has already garnered some amazing success and has a ton of big things happening down its pipeline including, a tour, a Mogul t-shirt line, as well as a new book!

"Your current situation is not your final destination." I got the chance to catch Darcel Laurie in her element at her first workshop in the "Back to Business" series. The workshop was centered around getting inspired and motivated to tackle your business head on. Attendees were all able to get amazing tips and advice from Philly's own, Nehemiah Davis. Davis is an author, philanthropist, and entrepreneur who founded the Nehemiah Davis Foundation  and is also the founder of the "Circle of Greatness Academy".

Davis gave a ton of powerful gems that will definitely prove useful once put into action. He discussed building your mindset up, removing limits from your life, and taking account of who you have around you. He also stressed "being the example" in your circle, you should be the one who sets the bar for your friends. He also stressed the three important things you can't get back: time, an opportunity, and your words. He closed his discussion with the "secret" to success: Serving. Putting others before yourself will not only help them, but it will also help you in return, because it always comes back tenfold.

Rare Geneticz: Kajuan Thorpe

With his up and coming clothing brand, Rare Geneticz, street wear designer, Kajuan Thorpe is bringing the term, "Real is Rare" to life.

At 29 years old, the South Philly native is out to create an inspiring name for himself and his brand, one dope piece at a time. His current items are simple and understated in design, yet carry a bold statement: RARE. When something is rare it means that it doesn't occur often or there are limited amounts of it, making it that much more valuable. 

Rare Geneticz, though fairly new, has a feel that already seems classic. This can be attributed to its easy and versatile pieces that would be sure to fit into almost anyone's wardrobe, including millennials, baby boomers and both men, and women.

When was Rare Geneticz founded? 

 Kajuan:  December 2016

How did you come up with the name and the design concept behind your apparel?

 Kajuan: The name Rare Geneticz was derived from having unique characteristics and having a positive approach in life.

 What type of apparel is included under the Rare Geneticz brand? For example, are there T-shirts, hoodies, etc.? Also what's the price range of your pieces?

 Kajuan: My brand will carry a wide variety of street wear such as t-shirts, hoodies, sweatsuits, jackets, hats etc. My prices fluctuate with pieces but will always be reasonable for my customers.

Tell me a little bit about the team behind the brand. For example: How many people do you have working with you? Are they designers as well? or are you a "one-man show"?

Kajuan: As of now it just consists of just me but in the future I wouldn't mind building with others.

Do you have a target audience/market for your apparel?

Kajuan: I never have a target audience my brand revolves around all walks of life young & fly,elder & cool...

Where do you see Rare Geneticz in the next 5 years?

I see Rare Geneticz as an international success constantly breaking fashion barriers making it among the brand elites top5, top5 top5!!!

The World of LiMM : Alim-Karim Kamara

The hip-hop world is ever-changing and it takes a lot for any music artist to be able to keep up with the wave, while also staying true to his or herself. I recently got the chance to connect with a young artist by the name of LiMM, who manages to not only ride the wave, but add in his own unique currents and tides. He has the uncanny ability to somehow fit in and stand out at the same time, creating a vibe that almost anyone can relate to.

LiMM, whose actual name Alim-Karim Kamara (no relation to me lol), was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone before moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and eventually settling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Canadian emcee's worldly background can also be heard throughout his music (Think Drake, minus the fake accents and add younger vibes). Not only is he cultured, LiMM also has experience in performing at a number of different venues, one in which includes St. Joseph's University's, Hagan Arena, where he performed as an opener for rapper Mac Miller during the school's annual Spring Concert this past April.

How would you describe your style of music?

LiMM: Hook master, but I can do anything. rap and sing, -I guess Hip-hop/Rap/R&B/Pop

In a world full of hungry, unsigned artists how do you separate yourself from the pack?

LiMM: I'm the voice of this generation. I speak real, raw & uncut truth. Kids can understand and relate. We're going through the same thing. Being 18, I'm only going to keep experiencing what the world has to offer, which will give me more to speak upon in regards to my music. There's always going to be someone that can relate.

Can you describe the time when you first realized that creating music was something you had to do?

LiMM: It was in the fall of 2016, I had just started my college career. In the few quick weeks, I built a quick rapport & released a track that did exceedingly well, way beyond my initial expectation. Weeks went by and I received a "DM" from a SoundCloud user from India. I had changed the cover photo of the track and he had asked me to switch it back, because he loved how it vibed with the song, setting the perfect mood. He then went on to talk about how the lyrics touched him, and how he could really relate to what I was saying. It was like putting everything that he ever thought out into perfect wording. He told me to keep pushing & that a lot of people would like it. I was sure to blow up soon. 

When i realized I was able to connect with people I didn't even know to that steep of a level and be able to do things for them, I knew it was something that I had to.

If you could narrow it down, what would you say is your favorite piece of work to date that you have created?

LiMM: I tend to really enjoy a new song while I'm creating it & even more before it's released. Once it gets released it becomes like whatever to me haha, but one of my favorite songs will always be Lost & Found. It's fairly new - out on SoundCloud. It's my most memorable piece because my little brother loves it. His genuine love for the song & my music specifically somehow brought us closer. 

Do you have any musical influences? if not, where do you draw inspiration from when coming up with new music? 

LiMM: Don't really have a musical influence, but I draw my inspiration from my life and the lives of the people surrounding me. I'm a people watcher. I see things and tell their stories, at least how I saw them or understood them to be. Sometimes its just a story. Other times it seems so relatable to my life that it makes me feel obligated to share it, so anyone else feeling a certain way about something can find comfort within the song - an assurance that they're not alone, that no one is alone.

What advice would you give to any up and coming artists like yourself?

LiMM:

• make yourself known. every and any chance you get.
• learn. ~ read. write. rehearse.
• find your niche and rock with it. 
• have faith & patience

Sink or Swim: A Shawn Smith Story

Artist, Shawn Smith formerly known as Young Savage, is back with new vibes in his latest music compilation, Sink or Swim: A Shawn Smith Story.

The album, which is told in a story-book style, gives us an inside look into Shawn's world. We are taken through the different stages of his career and treated to an insanely descriptive view of the Philly rapper's neighborhood, life, and progression as an artist. Personally, I found myself wrapped up in the album, starting with the first track, S.W.P where I literally could visualize everything he rapped about. Not to mention, Shawn's relaxed , yet powerful flow draws you in for more. I found myself nearing the end of the album before realizing that I hadn't skipped once. The only reason I did stop at track 10 (Care 4 Me) was because of my love for it. I simply had to run it back.

#TheInfluence: Modisch Spring 2017 Fashion Show

Recently, I was invited to cover "The Influence" Fashion Show by Modisch and it exceeded all of my expectations! Philly designer, Tay Gaye has been designing and hand-crafting all of his quality pieces for years and is definitely a designer to watch out for. 

I've been to almost all of the Modisch fashion showcases & each time the designs and aesthetics are taken to a new level. Everything from the models to the well-made clothing, and the amazing VIP treatment at this year's showcase made you feel and appreciate all of the hard work & dedication put into it. The entire event was orchestrated by Khadijah Muhammad, who is also responsible for putting together a number of other Modisch showcases. 

Along with the latest spring styles, guests were also treated to music performances by Liberian rap artist Yung Museo and artist Yung 187.

12-Year-Old Marley Dias, founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks is Almost Finished Her Activism Guide

Meet Marley Dias, a 12-year-old leader who is best known for the social activism movement #1000BlackGirlBooks. The drive set out to collect 1,000 books with black female leads to improve diversity in not only literature, but our world.. With the help of social media, Marley’s story went viral, gaining the attention of readers from all over the world. Having collected over 9,000 books to date, Marley and the GrassROOTS Community Foundation have donated to far more schools than they originally anticipated!

Having exceeded her goal, Marley set her sights on creating her own activism guide for children and teens. The nonfiction book will target ages 10 and up and will show kids how to turn their passions into action. It will explore “activism, social justice, volunteerism, equity and inclusion, using social media for good.” The book will also encourage literacy and diversity and guide young people to use their strengths to create a positive change, similar to what Marley did.

As for her #1000BlackGirlBooks Movement, Marley got the idea after growing tired of reading about white boys and dogs. She complained to her mother about the lack of literature that reflected black girls as the protagonist. Her mother– unwilling to simply accept her complaints–challenged her then 11-year-old daughter to do something about it.

Since starting her inspiring movement, Marley has been named Editor in Residence of Elle.com, where she interviewed Ava DuVernay, Misty Copeland, and Hillary Clinton. In addition to appearing in Elle, she has also been seen in People, PhillyCoive, FOX29’s Good Day Philadelphia, The Huffington Post, and on Ellen.

When I was younger, I absolutely LOVED when the Scholastic book fair came to my school! I was so obsessed to the point that I would dream about all of the different books the night before in anticipation of getting my hands on them the next day! 

At that age, I wish I had the drive and courage to share my love of reading with my peers like Marley. Reading has shaped the person I am today, and has helped to take me places I never imagined! Through my writing I share my love of words and learning and hope that I inspire my readers to read more, learn more, and simply DO MORE!

Talia Q: Heart of Haλo

I'm always fascinated by young business owners who drip with originality, so any opportunity I get to connect with them, I jump on it!  I recently got the chance to connect with the face behind the brand, Halo, an up and coming hat line that is not only dope aesthically, but conceptually.

Enter Talia Quarles, a 23-year-old Philly native who unlike a lot of other young designers, is stepping out of the box when it comes to running her small business. Instead of focusing on one "recognizable" design, Talia offers a range of different hat styles that boast a variety of logos, patterns and colors. In this approach she is not only expanding her reach in terms of her cutomer demographic, but she is also attracting the attention of potential retailers and other major buyers. Halo, in my personal opinion, hits a lot of the major points needed to launch and maintain a successful brand. Talia's line of hats  will defintely fit into almost anyone's wardrobe and compliment those who think hats "just aren't they're thing". The Halo line already looks like an established collection with its cool ass aesthetics and urban vibes.

TheWriteFashion (TWF): How did you come up with the name and the design concept for your line? 

Talia Quarles (TQ): The name Haλo pretty much came from the principals of what a halo actually stands for: symbolic for something inspiring and spiritual that protects the head. Why not wear you hat as a symbolic form of your halo. As Chance the rapper said "Wear your halo like a hat, that's like the latest fashion" I thought that was dope because the line was already in the works before the song Angel came out. I guess great minds think alike. 

The concept of the line is to promote graphics. I didn't want the line to be infiltrated with logos or really connected to a name. Oddly as it sounds, I wanted the consumer to appreciate the graphic and art put into it rather than just the name. 

TWF: What type of gear is included under your brand? Like are there hats, T-shirts, hoodies, etc.? 

TQ: As of now Haλo is a hat line. We sell multiple styles of hats. Snap backs, camp hats, dad hats, and more we're looking to expand our hat styles as we speak. Eventually we will add apparel to Haλo but it's just hats for now. 

TWF:Tell me a little bit about the team behind the brand. For example: How many people do you have working with you? Are they designers as well? or are you a "one person show"?

TQ: I pretty much work alone as the sole proprietor as of now but my friends help me with ideas and photo shoots.

TWF: Where do you see your brand in the next 5 years?

TQ: In the next 5 years, I would hope to have my own official flagship store, as well as having my brand sold in a few urban stores like Urban outfitters, Ubiq, PAC Sun, even Barneys.

TWF: Do you have a target audience/market for your apparel? 

TQ:  I would say that my target audience would be anyone that is true to their self who isn't afraid to explore and think outside of the box.

TWF: Do you have any favorite brands/ people that you look to for inspiration? 

TQ:I definitely get a lot of inspiration from Urban Outfitters but I mainly get my inspiration from the streets' ,the people , places and things I see.

I have had the pleasure of knowing this beauty for over 10 years and let's just say her growth and transformation have been awe-inspiring. She is very persistent and consistent, two traits that are often very difficult to maintain in her field. As an African American woman in the entertainment/modeling world, the odds are automatically stacked against you and Raelia has managed to prevail and stick to her passion. 

She is still a work in progress as almost all of us 20'somethings are, but she is destined to carve her own path in this crazy world, one accomplishment at a time!

Artists to Watch Out For: Philly's Own Young Savage

At the age of 17, Young Savage became something like a local celeb on the hip hop scene when he freestyled for 20 minutes straight on Power 99's radio show with Dj Cosmic Kev. At the height of battle rapping, when countless young people were rapping for sport, Young Savage aka Daeshawn Johnson, was determined to make a name for himself.

Fast forward to today, where the rap style may have shifted, Young Savage has always kept his eye on the prize. Over the years he has amassed countless mixtapes and music videos. Most recently, he has been gaining buzz for the visuals for his track, "Young Curry", which was produced by G.O.O.D music's Charlie Heat and Philly producer Kenif Muse. "Young Curry" has already gained over 20,000 plays on Sound Cloud, again proving his staying power. With musical influences from the likes of Kanye West and Jay Z, Young Savage's work ethic and raw talent is evident in his track record. He has a seasoned vibe about him and he's just getting started.

Karen Civil Features Philly's Own PnB Rock on Civil TV

Girl Boss and branding Guru, Karen Civil recently highlighted Philly artist PnB Rock in her Civil TV series, Welcome to My Neighborhood, which focuses on telling the tale behind some of today's up and coming artists. 

In the episode, Rock takes viewers to a studio breaking down the origin and the process of his popular RNB mixtape series. Viewers are also taken to the artist's childhood home, where he dove more into the struggles of growing up in the tough streets of Philly. 

“It’s really the crab in a barrel thing in Philly. Mother f***ers don’t want you to win in Philly. Everybody’s out here for themselves.” Rock said.

Young, Black & Bossy: Women Crush Wednesday Edition

I live for creative young individuals who possess an entrepreneurial spirit and a clear goal. They seem to carry themselves with a confidence that is only reserved for the determined few who aren't phased by questions like: "What if they don't like it?" or "What if I fail?" But instead, they face those doubts and naysayers with a question of their own: "What if I fly?!" 

And of course these individuals are even better when they are WOMEN! ( I may be a little biased lol). A few of my fave female bosses all just happen to be clothing designers. They each have different aesthetics but share a common goal: to make them pieces hit. (You thought I would have said something inspirational didn't you?) No but seriously they all want to see their brands on the backs of consumers both big and small all in an effort to help their lines flourish!

Below I briefly touch on why these ladies are indeed some of my BossCrushes/Faves.

Alnika is the owner of Lovello Elizabeth. Her brand is more on the causal/sporty side which of course is very versatile. Her pieces can be dressed up or down, maximizing their usage and wearability (making the most of your money).  Alnika's drive and marketability is what stands out the most in my opinion. She is clearly determined to make her brand a household name and I definitely see it coming to pass. She is a designer who is always reinventing herself all while staying true to herself. Lucreatia or Cree's, pieces are dressy, sexy and super chic. Her looks are basically the wardrobe equivalent to the soundtrack of my life! I mean her tag line says it all : "A little skin never hurts". Her designs are all custom made and are designed to compliment the skin you're in. Her looks step outside of the box and can help you bring your dream prom, birthday or any special event to life!  Also with a BFA in Fashion Design from the Moore College of Art and Design, Cree shows us just why she's such a boss! GRLSXGLD Sporting Club: Sabir Hall

As many of you may already know, clothing lines come a dime a dozen now a days and many of them often get lost in this metamorphic sea of unoriginalty . 

For a brand to actually stand out it takes not only originality, but creativity, good quality and marketability (amongst other things of course). A lot of clothing lines/ brands that I've been seeing lately appear to be of cheap quality or just carbon copies of what's trending or popular.

Providing the Wave. I recently got the chance to connect with clothing designer Sabir Hall, who in my opinion, hits a lot of the major points needed to launch and maintain a successful brand. Hall is the creative genius behind GRLSXGLD Sporting Club, a budding athletic/leisure apparel line that is dope in both concept and execution. What caught my eye was not only the designs of his apparel, but also the format in which he showcases it. The GRLSXGLD line already looks like an established collection with its cool axx aesthetics and urban vibes.

Not only is the line different visually, but also conceptually. Hall's thought process behind his line is what sold me and made me realize that he isn't riding anybody's wave when it comes to this shxt, he's providing it. 

After my interview with the 23-year-old designer I learned a lot about the story behind the brand, including from where it all started to where it eventually wants to go.

TheWriteFashion (TWF): What exactly is GRLSxGLD and when was it founded?

Sabir Hall ( GRLSXGLD): Established in early 2015, GRLSXGLD is a Sporting Club and clothing brand in association with the world. We aim to create exceptional leisurewear for the athletic, adventurous, and bold. Merging cutting edge designs with comfortable apparel to create the perfect blend between leisure and athletic wear.

TWF: How did you come up with the name and the design concept of your apparel? 

GRLSXGLD: Our name, deriving from (GIRLS & GOLD), is a representation of today’s society. Gone are the days of simple labor and hourly wages. We want more. We want to create, innovate, and lead like none before. GRLSXGLD represents that same spirit. GRLS(GIRLS), a representation of fame, is the idea that we all want to live a life in which we are honored or remembered for our services. GLD(GOLD), a representation of wealth, is our subconscious desire for financial prosperity. With these two ideas becoming more desirable in today’s culture, GRLSXGLD becomes life’s ambition.

Our designs are inspired by various sports and events throughout the world, whether it’s Formula 1 Racing or Grand Slam tennis. We try to create designs that carry a similar aesthetic to what you would see the participants or athletes wearing.

TWF: What type of gear is included under the GRLSxGLD brand? Like are there T-shirts, hoodies, etc.? Also how much do your pieces cost in general?

GRLSXGLD : We aim to eventually become a multifaceted brand, providing everything from T-shirts, down jackets, to accessories. For each collection we will introduce a new product that correlates with the overall vision of that particular project. Currently, our debut collection “GLD Series” features 3 long-sleeved t-shirts. Our next collection might just be towels and socks, I never really know until it’s all said and done. Generally speaking, the price range will increase with the quality. Right now our pricing is comparable to many streetwear brands but eventually we hope to hit a more luxurious pricing point.

TWF: Tell me a little bit about the team behind the brand. For example: How many people do you have working with you? Are they designers as well? or are you a "one-man show"?

GRLSXGLD: Right now, I currently run everything from design, creative direction, financial management, to public relations. You could definitely say I’m a one-man show. I started off self-teaching myself how to use Photoshop and create fashion designs. After finding my niche, I spent a few years learning the ins and outs of the fashion business, merchandising, economics, and pretty much anything relatable. I would like to eventually bring in a team so I can fully focus on the creative direction of the brand. So yeah, If anyone's interested, feel free to contact me lol.

TWF: Where do you see GRLSxGLD in the next 5 years?

GRLSXGLD:  In 5 years, I would like GRLSXGLD to be a respectable athletic/leisure wear brand that didn’t jeopardize its initial vision for the sake of sales. I’m not looking to be the biggest brand nor am I hoping to see our products in shelves around the world. I just want to create apparel of exceptional quality and remain exclusive. I think consumers place a certain level of value on products that aren’t widely available. That being said, I hope in the next 5 years GRLSXGLD’s products are viewed as something to be cherished.

TWF: Do you have a target audience/market for your apparel? 

GRLSXGLD: I’m kind of taking a different approach than most traditional brands. Rather than setting our sights on a particular age-range or market, I’m letting the target audience find GRLSXGLD. Whoever interacts and resonates with the brand most, is whom we’ll gear our focus towards. I’d personally like to appeal to a younger, less formal crowd, but if grandfathers like our pieces then so be it.

TWF: Do you have any favorite brands/ people that you look to for inspiration? 

GRLSXGLD: Not really..I grab inspiration from things outside of fashion like film, classical paintings, and just nature in general. Although I’m not directly influenced, I would say brands such as Ralph Lauren or even Supreme are admirable and could serve as benchmarks for the growth of GRLSXGLD. Besides that, I try to inspire myself if possible. Just for the sake of preserving originality.

The Employment Doctor: Pia Abdul-Aziz

So you finally decide to take the time out of your "busy" schedule to look at different jobs and fill out some applications. You get though all of the dreaded demographic and work history questions and now it asks for you to upload your RESUME! dun dun dun! This is the part where most of us either skip over or stop all together. Either way you have screwed yourself over. If you decide not to add your resume it shows that A:you can't follow directions or B: you aren't professional enough to own a proper resume. In either case you are most likely left without a job.

A decent resume can be the catalyst in you landing your dream job, ultimately changing your life. Some of the biggest issues seen in a lot of people's resumes include improper formatting and irrelevant info. Both big no-no's.

Another area that people often overlook during the job hunting process is the thank you letter. Thank you letters can be that deciding factor between you and another equally-qualified candidate. Thanking a prospective employer for allowing you to interview with him or her shows your professionalism and attention to detail.

It can all be a bit confusing and overwhelming and some of you may not even no where to start, but fear not, I know a young lady who has it down to a science and has all the questions to your job-hunting needs, helping you to land that dream job!

TheWriteFashion (TWF) : Are you you the official founder of The Employment Doctor? If so, what inspired you to get into this area of business?

Pia Abdul-Aziz (P.A) : Yes, I am the official founder of The Employment Doctor, I began showing interest in the area of business when I realized the demand for JOBS and the lack of assistance most had to obtaining one! I decided to make it my duty to assist others in an area that they lacked.

TWF : How did you come up with the name?

P. A : "Doctors" are often thought to "know a lot" in their area. For instance doctors of medicine or doctors of literature...I decided my brand and I would be the "doctors" of Employment! That's basically how the name "The Employment Doctor" came along, with a lot of help from my mother of course.

TWF : What all does the "The Employment Doctor" do? i.e. (what services do you provide)

P. A :  TED services include resume, cover letter, thank you letter and reference list generation. We also apply to jobs for our clients and provide editing and proof reading services for those who don't need us to create their work for them, but to look over it! Mock Interviews will also be available in January 2016!

TWF : Tell me a little bit about the team behind the brand. For example: How many people do you have working with you, how did you choose your team, or let me now if you're just a "one woman show"

P. A :The Employment Doctor started out as a "one woman show" until I realized that I certainly need others to provide assistance and knowledge! Currently my team consist of 3 women, I am the writer, but I have Amber and Sadiqaa who both hold college degrees and work in Human Resource departments at their full time jobs. They are responsible to all tips, advice, and pointers listed on the site!

TWF : Where do you hope to see The Employment Doctor in the next 5 years?

P. A :  In the next five years I hope to have an office for my business and I hope to be able to make my business a full time job for myself.

TWF :  How much time does it normally take for your clients to land a position?

P. A : Most clients land jobs within 2-3 months with the complete help of my team.

TWF : Tell me one of the biggest tips you relay to the clients that you work with?

P. A : Be open to advice and change! Clients MUST be open to all advice we provide if they want to experience the success rate of others. Put your trust in us and let us help you!
