Detroit "Freezer Mom" Sentenced to Life Without Parole
As Reported By DETROIT (WJBK) -
The Detroit mom of four who admitted in court to killing two of her children and putting their bodies in a freezer was sentenced to life in prison on Friday.
Mitchelle Blair admitted last month to killing her 13-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son. She said she did so because her two surviving children said they had been sexually abused by the other two children.
FOX 2's Maurielle Lue was in the courtroom when Mitchelle Blair was sentenced. She said Blair could be heard from the hallway before she entered the courtroom.
The hearing, which was set to start at 9:00, was delayed until 10:30 as other cases were heard before Blair's.
Blair has maintained that her two surviving children were sexually abused by Stoni and Steven.
During her time in court on Friday, she said the fathers of her children are drunk liars and she said she accepts responsibility for her actions. She also spoke about her childhood and said she was raped and beaten as well.
She described how she poured scalding water on the victims, beat them with sticks and put trash bags over their heads.
"So this was your way of inflicting punishment?" Judge Dana Hathaway asked.
"Definitely," replied Blair, 36.
"I don't regret none of this. ... I don't feel no remorse for the death of them demons," she said.
The mother underlined that sentiment at her sentencing hearing.
"As horrendous as everybody thinks I am - that's fine," Blair told Hathaway.
After about 10 minutes in court, she was sentenced to life without parole and she refused paperwork to file an appeal, saying she did not need it.
The bodies of Stoni and Steven were discovered in a freezer in March, while Blair was being evicted from her Detroit home. Police believe they died in 2012 and 2013.
She pleaded guilty on June 29th and explained to the judge why she killed them in a gripping, 25 minute long story.
