Film in Review: Straight Outta Compton
Straight Outta Compton basically tells the backstory of the group N.W.A including how the group was formed, breaking down the individual lives all of its members, which included Dr.Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella.. The film also chronicles the group's rise to fame and all of the controversy surrounding it. It also touches on N.W.A's disbandment way before the death of fan favorite Eazy-E. What makes this film stand out from other N.W.A. depictions is that this one stars the son of an actual group member. Ice Cube's son, O'Shea Jackson plays his father in the iconic bio-pic and gives a spot-on performance. Jackson not only looks exactly like his father, he grins like him, laughs like him and even talks like him. In fact, almost all of the actors were true to the actual people they were depicting which made the movie that much more interesting. I think Snoop Dogg's character was one of the most notable ones. Played by Lakeith Stanfield , Snoop's character not only was tall and thin, but he also sounded exactly like the Gin & Juice rapper.
Box Office: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Drops Platinum $5 Million on Thursday
The film not only told the story of the notorious rap group, it also gave a clear and "brutally honest" look at the violent and dangerous relationship between young African Americans and law enforcement during the time. From the 1980's through the early 90's , the streets of Compton, California were some of the most dangerous in the country. So when five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest "music" that rebelled against abusive authority, the world didn't know how to receive it. N.W.A's gangster rap or "reality rap" gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation.
The film is a definite must-see and will have you stuck from beginning to the end!
