Big Night for African Americans at 2015 Emmy Awards
Last night's Emmys was definitely a memorable one for African Americans! With Viola Davis making history after becoming the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for best actress in a drama series for her role in the hit series How to Get Away with Murder. Ms. Davis gave a moving speech where she quoted slavery pioneer, Harriet Tubman:
"I see a line and over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. I can't seem to get there now. I cant seem to get over that line," said Davis, quoting Harriet Tubman. "But let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of color from anything else is opportunity."
The night was full of amazing nominees and wins, including Uzo Aduba for her role as "Crazy Eyes" in Orange is the New Black and Regina King for her role in American Crime.
After receiving her history-making award giving her emotional speech, Davis received a standing ovation from the crowd:
"You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. Here's to all the writers, awesome people."
