Mass Retail Closings: The Decline of the Mall
There was a time when the mall was the go-to place to satisfy all of your shopping needs and just a great place to link up with friends, but with the rising age of technology that has all changed. Today's technology has made it all to easy for us to do all of our shopping and socializing without actually "shopping" or "socializing". Technology has single–handedly eliminated the need for a person to leave the confines of their home to perform everyday activities that typically required human interactions. With that being said people have been relying more and more on their computers, tablets and smart-phones to do all of their shopping; virtually eliminating the need for super malls and all of their many retailers and all of their accompanying employees.
This stark reality is all too familiar as yet another store closing has been announced. Wet Seal, the teen retailer which was wildly popular during the early 2000's is set to shut down permanently and close its 171 stores which were all that was left after another major closing in 2015.
Earlier in January, The Limited, another apparel brand primarily based in malls, shut down all 250 of its stores and laid off 4,000 workers. Mall staples Sears and Macy's have also announced mass closures this year, with Sears planning to close 150 of its stores and Kmart stores in 2017 and Macy's planning to shut down another 100 stores.
