Southside With You: New Film Inspired By Barack and Michelle Obama's First Date
It all started in the Windy City back in 1989...
Southside With You, is the romantic dramedy inspired by the first date between our very own President and First Lady, Barack and Michelle Obama. Starring Parker Sawyers (as Barack) and The Haves & Have Nots star Tika Sumpter (as Michelle), the film set in The Windy City, describes the couple's first date to see Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing in 1989. The date, which took place on a summer afternoon and evening, included a trip to the Art Institute of Chicago and the couple's first kiss, outside of an ice cream parlor (my kinda date).
The stars perfectly capture the classic style of the president and the First Lady.
In the newly released shots, Sawyers is wearing a crisp blue button-down shirt with khaki pants while Sumpter wears a bright orange shirt and beige skirt. Her hair is pulled back in a French chignon reminiscent of a younger Michelle and Sawyers' hair is cut low, a style seen on Obama back in his younger photos.
Real Life Fairy tale. Barack, met Michelle when he took a job at a law firm while studying at Harvard. While at the firm, Michelle was assigned to be his adviser.
"I asked her out. She refused," the future president would later recall to O, The Oprah Magazine. "She kept refusing."
Michelle said that because she was Barack's adviser, it was "not appropriate." According to Barack, it was only when he "offered to quit my job " that "at last she relented." ( ah, so sweet!)
