NAACP Leader, Rachel Dolezal Accused of Lying About Her Race
The parents of Rachel Dolezal have come out claiming that their Caucasian daughter has been passing as an African American woman for the past 20 years.
Ruthanne and Larry Dolezal said their daughter has always identified with the African American culture and had black siblings who were adopted. Growing up, she was said to have ran with a predominately African American crowd. The Dolezals said after their daughter married and later divorced an African American man in 2004 , she began identifying more with the race. She even went as far making claims that she was partially African American and the daughter of bi-racial parents.
UPDATE: Rachel Dolezal’s True Lies
Dolezal, who has a masters degree from Howard University, a historically black university, and is also an adjunct professor of African studies at Eastern Washington University, reportedly cut off communication with her parents. Her father told BuzzFeed News the reason for this is that she "doesn't want us visible in the Spokane area in her circle because we're Caucasian." (E NEWS)
In an interview with Atlanta's 11 Live the Dolezals said, "Rachel has wanted to be somebody she's not. She's chosen not to just be herself but to represent herself as an African American woman or a biracial person. And that's simply not true," said Ruthanne Dolezal."
The same day of the 11 Alive interview, Rachel had an interview of her own with KREM 2, in it she explained how she currently doesn't have a relationship with her parents.
"There is a lawsuit that's been going on for almost a year, once I supported my sister and allegations against her older brother," said Rachel."
Rachel Speaks out amid controversy
According to a report put out by Today, Dolezal identified as black, white and American Indian on her application to become chair of Spokane's office of Police Ombudsman Commission.
A reporter from KXLY 4 questioned Dolezal about her race this past February, after Spokane's NAACP president said racist and threatening letters had been sent to the chapter's post office box. She was shown a picture of her father Larry Dolezal, who is white, and confirmed his identity. When asked by the reporter if her dad "really is an African American man," Dolezal didn't give a direct answer.
"That's a very—I don't know what you're implying," she replied.

Then the reporter asked Dolezal, point blank, "Are you African American?"
"I don't understand the question. I did tell you that yes, that's my dad," she said, ending the interview abruptly.
The NAACP Stands Behind Dolezal
The whole things is just crazy. It's like the wheels of history haven been reversed. What was first recognized during the 18th century, passing was more commonly associated with light-skinned African Americans who passed as white people in order to evade the injustices and discrimination that were associated with being a black person during the time. In my opinion, passing back then as a white person back then was more understandable due to the dire circumstances, which included slavery, lynching, segregation, the list goes on. But, today, in the case of Rachel Dolezal, its just plain selfish, disrespectful and embarrassing.
