NYFW: Xuly.Bët Makes History With First All Black Model Fashion Show
Or Black history that is...
Malian fashion designer Lamine Kouyaté broke barriers during the FW16 New York Fashion Week with not only his standout pieces, but his catwalk which featured a line up of all black models, a NYFW first!
The Xuly.Bët line features a beautiful mix of 90's chic, hip-hop, urban/sporty, outerspace and Afro-centric inspired pieces. Kouyaté 's use of vibrant colors and limitless fabrics help to create looks that are out of this world.
The show opened with Philly's very own, Raelia Lewis. She was part of the cast of America's Next Top Model, season 22, the last of the long running series. She was also the perfect fit for the Xuly.Bët opening, with her fierce and effortless walk, commanding the attention of everyone in the room.
Kouyaté did something that should have been done a long time ago, with today's blatant lack of African American models that are seen (or rather not seen) at a lot of these major fashion events. Also at a time of racial unrest, having an all black line up was a breath of fresh air and a sign of better days to come!
