GRLSXGLD Sporting Club: Sabir Hall
As many of you may already know, clothing lines come a dime a dozen now a days and many of them often get lost in this metamorphic sea of unoriginalty .
For a brand to actually stand out it takes not only originality, but creativity, good quality and marketability (amongst other things of course). A lot of clothing lines/ brands that I've been seeing lately appear to be of cheap quality or just carbon copies of what's trending or popular.
Providing the Wave. I recently got the chance to connect with clothing designer Sabir Hall, who in my opinion, hits a lot of the major points needed to launch and maintain a successful brand. Hall is the creative genius behind GRLSXGLD Sporting Club, a budding athletic/leisure apparel line that is dope in both concept and execution. What caught my eye was not only the designs of his apparel, but also the format in which he showcases it. The GRLSXGLD line already looks like an established collection with its cool axx aesthetics and urban vibes.
Not only is the line different visually, but also conceptually. Hall's thought process behind his line is what sold me and made me realize that he isn't riding anybody's wave when it comes to this shxt, he's providing it.
After my interview with the 23-year-old designer I learned a lot about the story behind the brand, including from where it all started to where it eventually wants to go.

TheWriteFashion (TWF): What exactly is GRLSxGLD and when was it founded?
Sabir Hall ( GRLSXGLD): Established in early 2015, GRLSXGLD is a Sporting Club and clothing brand in association with the world. We aim to create exceptional leisurewear for the athletic, adventurous, and bold. Merging cutting edge designs with comfortable apparel to create the perfect blend between leisure and athletic wear.
TWF: How did you come up with the name and the design concept of your apparel?
GRLSXGLD: Our name, deriving from (GIRLS & GOLD), is a representation of today’s society. Gone are the days of simple labor and hourly wages. We want more. We want to create, innovate, and lead like none before. GRLSXGLD represents that same spirit. GRLS(GIRLS), a representation of fame, is the idea that we all want to live a life in which we are honored or remembered for our services. GLD(GOLD), a representation of wealth, is our subconscious desire for financial prosperity. With these two ideas becoming more desirable in today’s culture, GRLSXGLD becomes life’s ambition.
Our designs are inspired by various sports and events throughout the world, whether it’s Formula 1 Racing or Grand Slam tennis. We try to create designs that carry a similar aesthetic to what you would see the participants or athletes wearing.
TWF: What type of gear is included under the GRLSxGLD brand? Like are there T-shirts, hoodies, etc.? Also how much do your pieces cost in general?
GRLSXGLD : We aim to eventually become a multifaceted brand, providing everything from T-shirts, down jackets, to accessories. For each collection we will introduce a new product that correlates with the overall vision of that particular project. Currently, our debut collection “GLD Series” features 3 long-sleeved t-shirts. Our next collection might just be towels and socks, I never really know until it’s all said and done. Generally speaking, the price range will increase with the quality. Right now our pricing is comparable to many streetwear brands but eventually we hope to hit a more luxurious pricing point.
TWF: Tell me a little bit about the team behind the brand. For example: How many people do you have working with you? Are they designers as well? or are you a "one-man show"?
GRLSXGLD: Right now, I currently run everything from design, creative direction, financial management, to public relations. You could definitely say I’m a one-man show. I started off self-teaching myself how to use Photoshop and create fashion designs. After finding my niche, I spent a few years learning the ins and outs of the fashion business, merchandising, economics, and pretty much anything relatable. I would like to eventually bring in a team so I can fully focus on the creative direction of the brand. So yeah, If anyone's interested, feel free to contact me lol.
TWF: Where do you see GRLSxGLD in the next 5 years?
GRLSXGLD: In 5 years, I would like GRLSXGLD to be a respectable athletic/leisure wear brand that didn’t jeopardize its initial vision for the sake of sales. I’m not looking to be the biggest brand nor am I hoping to see our products in shelves around the world. I just want to create apparel of exceptional quality and remain exclusive. I think consumers place a certain level of value on products that aren’t widely available. That being said, I hope in the next 5 years GRLSXGLD’s products are viewed as something to be cherished.
TWF: Do you have a target audience/market for your apparel?
GRLSXGLD: I’m kind of taking a different approach than most traditional brands. Rather than setting our sights on a particular age-range or market, I’m letting the target audience find GRLSXGLD. Whoever interacts and resonates with the brand most, is whom we’ll gear our focus towards. I’d personally like to appeal to a younger, less formal crowd, but if grandfathers like our pieces then so be it.
TWF: Do you have any favorite brands/ people that you look to for inspiration?
GRLSXGLD: Not really..I grab inspiration from things outside of fashion like film, classical paintings, and just nature in general. Although I’m not directly influenced, I would say brands such as Ralph Lauren or even Supreme are admirable and could serve as benchmarks for the growth of GRLSXGLD. Besides that, I try to inspire myself if possible. Just for the sake of preserving originality.
