Beauty Highlight: How to Get Yara Shahidi's Gorgeous Emmys Look

I know I’m not the only still obsessing over Yara Shahidi at last night’s Emmy awards! The Grown-ish star looked gorgeous in a pink, bejeweled gown by Gucci, accompanied by a goddess worthy top bun and makeup combo.The actress, who was texting with her glam squad right up until the 2018 Emmys red carpet, dropped a photo gown into her glam group chat and the rest was red-carpet history. Her beauty team, which includes longtime makeup artist, Emily Cheng, came up with a look that made Yara the belle of the ball.

“We really wanted to play up the romantic color of her gown,” Cheng told Refinery29 exclusively. Cheng decided to give Shahidi an all-over rosy glow using one unexpected product: lipstick.

Turns out Shahidi’s warm, rose eyeshadow isn’t eyeshadow at all— it’s Bobbi Brown Lux Matte Lipstick in Burnt Cherry and lip liner in Burnt Sienna. “I wanted to create a watercolor look, where the eye colors bleed into each other versus looking really perfect,” Cheng says. She blended the brownish lip liner into the crease and outer corners of her eyes, then layered the pink bullet on top of her lids. Cheng finished by tapping Bobbi Brown lip balm onto the center of her lids to highlight them. She finished by buffing lipstick onto her cheeks and lip.

Lipstick wasn’t the only product doing double duty for the Emmy Awards. To get her skin glowing , Shahidi prepped her skin with a SK-II Facial Treatment Mask. When she was done, Cheng squeezed out the leftover serum from the sheet mask to moisturize the actress's entire body. “There’s always a ton of liquid left over in these sheet masks, so I like to use [them] on her body instead of a thick moisturizer,” Cheng says. “It’s also a stylist's dream because it won’t stain garments.”

I’m already planning to recreate this look for my next big outing, even if it is another day at work.

As a dark brown girl, I'm always on the market looking for new products to compliment my skin tone, be it blush, concealer, lip gloss, etc. I sometimes struggle finding products in shades made for me , so I always end up buying multiple products and mixing and layering them to create looks that I actually like. The simple fact is that although some major beauty brands are working to cater to a wider range of complexions, there still is a long way before all of us are included in the beauty spectrum. In my search, I came across this article below from Allure magazine, which focuses on that very idea. 

" From her home in Dallas, Texas, vlogger, Nyma Tang posts videos of herself trying out the deepest shades of makeup on the market in a series appropriately named "The Darkest Shade," Revelist reports. It's literally the importance of inclusivity for shade ranges in action. Tang has put popular products like Tarte's cult-favorite Shape Tape and the Anastasia Beverly Hills Foundation Stick to the test. "'The Darkest Shade' series was inspired by going to different makeup counters and not being able to readily find makeup in my shade," Tang tells Allure. "The reason why the series is called 'The Darkest Shade' is because if a company happens to carry a foundation and other makeup products that work for me, it's usually the darkest shade they carry."

With that experience, Tang is well-acquainted with the shade ranges from the most popular cosmetics companies and how they work on her skin tone. She had a strong feeling that Kardashian's Deep Dark wouldn't work on her skin tone. (Spoiler alert: she was right.) Despite this, she still purchased the kit and tried it, in order to bring awareness to the oversight of deeper skin tones when it comes to contouring. She says she has yet to find a kit for her skin tone and ends up using eye shadow instead.

"Showing what the darkest shades looks like on my skin tone is important because there aren't a lot of people with my skin complexion in mainstream media or on YouTube," Tang says about all her videos, not only her latest. "People tend to not know what to do with my skin complexion. Also, my 'Darkest Shade' series can be used as a reference list of different cosmetic companies that cater to deeper skin tones."

As for the video she posted on July 11, "I was compelled to do this not only because a lot of you guys wanted to see it, but because I felt like if I didn't do it, then the darker side of the spectrum is just going to keep going unnoticed — especially when it comes to contour," Tang explained. "Whether or not this product works, I hope companies realize that when it comes products, you have to include everybody." In less than a week, the video has been viewed almost a million times.

When Kim Kardashian launched her first-ever contour kit last month in a shade called Deep Dark, Nyma Tang was skeptical. But she wasn't doubting Kim Kardashian — in fact, she respects her. The 26-year-old beauty vlogger from South Sudan was more concerned about the Deep Dark shade working on her skin tone because, in her opinion, contour kits tend to completely disregard her.

The message that rings true in this video (and Nyma Tang's entire series) is that deeper skin tones are underrepresented in the beauty industry. "This struggle not only exists with the deeper side of the spectrum but also with the paler side, as well," she points out. "I'm also trying to make people aware that there is a market for the extreme sides of the spectrum. Beauty should be inclusive, no matter your skin tone." Tang does note, however, that the industry is "slowly evolving" and finding makeup that fits her skin tone is becoming less tasking. "I'm excited for the future of makeup," she says.  " Allure

What first started out as a booming line of lip glosses and liners, quickly spawned into a full fledged cosmetic line made up of highlighters, or (Kylighters), eyeliners, and eye shadows too. Kylie Jenner and her makeup line, Kylie Cosmetics have managed to dominate almost every area of a woman's makeup arsenal in under a year's time.

But with almost any budding brand comes its pitfalls. Recently, Kylie Cosmetics has been receiving a number of complaints and criticisms claiming that the company has been sending out empty "Kylight' palettes! These unsatisfied customers have even taken to social media to voice their disappointment, which of course can spell bad news for business.

I mean you can understand their point. It’s bad enough paying a delivery charge, but paying $8.95 to ship air?! That's just absurd.

But of course with all complaints, there is speculation. BUT, Kylie Cosmetics has yet to address this complaint formally and has instead addressed some customers privately via social media.
